Oh my. I just got a message from a local TV personality (Don W. over at Channel 9). He wanted to speak with the author of 4&20bb ... and did he have the right number? I called him back, but got his voice mail. Left message. Haha! Local television. What a hoot ;-)

Time:5:34 pm.
The Good: Finally heard back from the G.O. boys. Sorta. After sending them another email asking, gently, WTF?, they responded with a quick but pleasant "sorrywe'reinthemiddleofmovingrightnowwe'llgetbacktoyouassoonaswecan." Hey, good enough. I just wanted to know they were still alive. When/if the project moves forward, that'll be great. Until then, I'll consider it very back-most burner -- and consider myself relieved.

The Bad: Apparently the Kirkus review was so bad Liz didn't want to show it to me. At least, she says it was tepid, and God love her, she might be understating for effect. It seems the ladies at Tor were going to wait to share this with me until the RoF review comes out -- because they're pretty sure that one will be quite good, and they wanted to give me a great review to balance out the not-so-great review. They're sweet as can be, they are. Liz admits to being caught, though, and she's sending it in the mail.

The Ugly: There is no ugly. Things are going pretty good right now. I'm even going to have a website soon, very soon, yes soon. No, seriously. I was poking around on it today, getting familiar with it. I won't be abandoning LJ or anything, but it'll be nice to have a pro site instead of just the LJ.

Have lost my publicist :-( I really liked her, but she's leaving TOR to go teach English in China. Such is life, I suppose. I'll be assigned to someone else before long, and hopefully this won't mean anything dire for the campaign.

Also, no word yet from the G.O. boys.
Surprise.

Began a new short story, though. Will probably contribute it to that [:: hush hush ::] anthology-in-progress that I've been invited to contribute to. Things seem to be going well for that project, by the way; they've gotten the editor-in-chief on board that they wanted, and the roster for writers is filling up fast. I'll talk about the story more when I've got it finished.

Okay.
That's all for now.

Time:10:39 am.
Mood: worn out.
Since I'm scrambling for good news, in lieu of payment from TOR (which hypothetically is being processed right now) ... last night I got up to 5500 words [out of approx. 11,000] on the latest G.O. project -- you know, the one that they may never ask me for, much less pay for. I haven't heard from them in nearly 2 months now, but just in case they ask for it, I'm going to have it ready. This is the last section I'm writing blind, though. If they want more, they'll have to start being a tad more communicative.

I'm not sure I care how this ends up. I need the money (and in all fairness, they have been paying up as promised), but I have other projects I could be/would rather be working on. For example, I still owe these nice people an article by July 30th. It'll be much the same as the one I did for Dark Realms, but with a more literary/historical bent. The editor there liked the subject material and invited the contribution. I've got plenty of source material, and it won't take me long to write ... but it's just one more thing, you know?

God, I'm tired.

Time:10:28 am.
Mood: nervous.
The good: Got an email from my publicist. 4&20bb will be the lead review in the October issue of Realms of Fantasy (out on stands August 24). Oh God, I hope it's a good review. PLEASE let it be a good review ...

The bad: Still no check for the WTTK advance. It should've been here last week. Liz is on the case, though. Last time it was late because someone's assistant went on vacation and left it on her desk; hopefully this time it will be something equally simply resolved. Liz hasn't failed me yet.

The ugly: Still no word from the G.O. guys. Tonight I'm going to get cracking on section three, but I'm not holding my breath.

Time:4:38 pm.
Update re: my previous WTF? post.

Glitch at work. No shit. Some funny tweaking of the phone lines at my work place apparently bounced an old message back into my inbox. We had a good laugh over it, once he finally reached me at home (left work early today, because boss is uber-cool).

In short, there is no news.
None at all. Just ... gremlins in the voice mail system.

Too weird.
Too weird altogether.

ACK! I hate it when that happens. I came back from lunch and Lantz had called ... left a number, no other info -- just "call me back." I did, but I missed him. I sent him an email, too. He never calls for no good reason. Is it good news? Is my check here? If so, why didn't he just say so? Is it bad news? Is it for the wrong amount? Did Kirkus call me a quack?

Heard from the world's best editor.
She says paperwork went in for my advance payment today.
Lantz should have dough for me in about 2 weeks.

It's only a couple of grand, but hey, I need it.

Time:10:38 am.
Mood: excited.
Sent off Draft One on Sunday night.
No word yet, and probably will be no word for awhile.
It's a lot of reading and my editor is a busy lady.
Still, I wait. And I fidget.

In other news, though -- good news, even -- I got an email from my publicist with this happy bit of info: Kirkus is going to review 4&20bb in their print mag. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the magazine, I give you this, lifted from an article at Poets and Writers:on prepublication forums and their importance )

Here's hoping it's a good review, eh?

And ladies, gentlemen, et. al., I've got a Draft Zero.

Also, I've got a rum-based beverage in my hand, so I'm logging off now.

110,000+.
Dammit.

Still not finished. Will probably end up having to double back and remove a scene or two, which is not the end of the world or anything; I'd much rather start out with too much and trim it down than have to little and fatten it up. Even so, I really ... really ... really ... REALLY wish I could complete this first draft. It's driving me crazy.

That having been said, I wrote nearly 9000 words this weekend, so at least I'm producing.

Time:2:17 pm.
Mood: optimistic.
90,000+ words. And it's only a little after 2:00.
More to come. I hope (hope) that maybe (maybe) I'll be able
to cough up a full draft by the end of this long weekend.

But for now, I could use a break. I think me and Jym are going
to head out for rootbeer floats and thrifting. Tonight, I'll do more.

Yup.

Y'all are crazy. Some looney went and anonymously gave me another year of paid time on this sucker. Thanks, whoever you are! I'll try to keep fighting the good fight over here.

Speaking of good fights, I got a 2000 word starter on part two of the GhostOrb project, and another 3000 words on WTTK this weekend. This brings the total count so far on the novella to 13,000+ words; and it brings the book status up to 80,000+ words. Progress muddles forward, it does.

Maybe more tonight. We'll see.

Time:10:11 am.
Mood: tired.
Note to self ... I let this LJ expire as a paid account about a week ago. And yet? The lightly-customed paid style remains in place. Not that I'm complaining -- it's just an observation.

Anyhoo. Back on the pony again, so to speak. Last night, I got a couple thousand words written -- bringing the present total up over 78,000. And I'm still nowhere NEAR my conflict resolution. Another 20K is easily possible, which makes this a freaking EPIC for me. My previous book-length-type stuff has rarely gone over 65 or 70K (with the exception of the 4&20 revise, which will be about 90K).

This weekend I will get some work done on the GhostOrb project, though I got some news last night that dulls my enthusiasm a little: the full release of the project has been delayed for a couple of weeks. No big deal, I know. And as long as they continue to pay me, then I've got nothing to complain about. Still, I'm awfully happy with the material -- and I'd like to see it make a public debut ASAP. Oh well. I'd like to see a royalty check for a skillion dollars too, but if wishes were were fishes, we'd all cast nets.

I enjoy the occasional Tarot reading, though I don't put much stock in those that are randomly generated online. If there's anything to it as a form of divination, I'm sure it comes from the exchange of people involved -- not from my distant interaction with a keyboard. Even so. Well, you know. I heard there was an H.P. Lovecraft Tarot, and I went stupid.

See?

Dammit. Now I want a real reading from someone who knows what he/she's doing, and can explain what everything means.

Screw this.
I can't stare at a computer any more today.

Maybe I'll get some work done tomorrow night.
But not right now.
Right now I need a drink and a nap.

Oh, hey.

Last night I sent off segment 1, The Man with One Thumb, to GhostOrb.
It stands at 11,125 words -- so a little long, but I'll be more careful next time.

Time:9:45 am.
Up to not quite 8500 words on the first segment of AQP
Next time I sit down with it, I will probably finish up this 11,000 word (approx.) installment.
Let this be my refrain: so far, so good.

I'm enjoying the story quite a lot.
Fun to write. Entertaining. Etcetera.
And, if all goes according to plan, money will come with it.
